According to the 2024 Chilean Environmental Performance Assessment Report released by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) on the 7th, Chile is currently experiencing a serious water resources and environmental crisis. The report emphasizes that Chile faces multiple challenges in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving air quality, waste management, and addressing the increasingly severe water crisis.

Jo Tyndall, Director of the Environment Agency of the OECD, stated in a report that Chile has taken important measures in environmental protection with the adoption and implementation of resolutions such as the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, but there are still issues such as insufficient environmental resources for adaptation to development. The report proposes 36 environmental protection recommendations to Chile, including rationalizing water allocation and improving water source quality.

It is reported that the current Chilean environmental performance assessment is the third assessment conducted by the organization on the country. The first assessment was conducted in 2005, when the organization proposed 52 improvement suggestions to Chile; The second evaluation was conducted in June 2016, and the organization made 54 recommendations. This assessment began in January 2023, and the organization conducted interviews and research with Chilean public sector agencies, non-governmental organizations, local authorities, international organizations, and environmental experts from multiple countries to integrate the environmental performance assessment report.
